Les Vespérales de l'orgue du Sacré-Cœur presents SIRÈNES: a mythological retelling, a new audiovisual work by Gavin Fraser and Esther-Ruth Teel for organ, voice, electronics, and film.
Text and performance: Esther-Ruth Teel
Composition and film: Gavin Fraser
SIRENS, a work for voice, pipe organ, live electronics, fixed media, and film, explores the mythological creatures of Homer’s Odyssey and its depiction of sirens as objects of lust and sexual fantasy. This work recontextualizes sirens as the author of their own story, and explores the inherent undertones of sexual violence in their mythology. Through music, text, and visuals, the siren moves through pain and grief to reclaim her power.
Supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and presented in collaboration with the Canadian International Organ Competition (CIOC) and Suoni per il popolo.
